Welcome this coffee from the family farm run by Bedhatu Jibicho. Bedhatu is native to the Worka area in the Gedeb District of Yirgacheffe. Her late husband was granted the land in the 1960s from the Ethiopian govt., and after he passed away (1991) Bedhatu continued to single-handedly manage the farm while raising six children! Her farm has been an emblem of success as the coffee was highlighted as a model for farmers, and Bedhatu received training on how to prepare and sell her coffee as its own separate lot- creating a new program of coffee differentiation from the cooperative’s homogenized blend of many farmers’ coffees. Her 84-acre farm employs 20 year round workers and 130 seasonal workers during harvest, and primarily women. The farm produces 5 containers of coffee, and is always among Royal Coffees top lots. The premiums have been reinvested in the community: more cherry collection sites (for other producers) and road construction.
This lot is continuously hand sorted, and floated to remove less dense beans, then immediately spread out on raised beds to dry for 12-20 days. The dry cherry is often covered in the mid-afternoons to prevent cracking/uneven evaporation.
